The Delights of the Thames in London
By Paul Mcindoe

The River Thames runs right through the city of London and divides it into the northern and southern regions of the capital. But while you might enjoy focusing on finding plenty of places to see in the thick of the city itself, don't overlook the activities that are right on the river.

One of the best examples is the Tower Bridge. This superb bridge - recognisable by its structure and the distinctive blue trim - is home to a museum which tells you all about its history. And if you time it right, you can also watch the bridge open to let ships through.

Another popular thing you can do on the banks of the Thames lies further west along the river. The London Eye is on the south bank of the Thames and provides a unique and spectacular way to see for miles when the weather permits! You will certainly see a lot of the river this way.

Of course, one of the best ways to see the river is to get on it. There are countless river tours that are available throughout the year; simply check with the company you book with to see when you can go. But, instead of taking a standard tour along the Thames, why not try a James Bond Adventure or perhaps a "Pirates of the Thames" Tour? If this is of interest to you, then look out for the orange speedboats on arrival near the river!

If your budget is slim and you still want to get the best from the city, opt for a stroll along either the north or south bank of the river. Many people walk for miles and cross via the various bridges to get an even better view of the city. Watch out for the Oxo Tower on the south bank, which has a superb restaurant that is well worth visiting.

You can even visit an old - and very famous - operating theatre not far from the river, which is located close to Guy's Hospital. This gives an alarming, but fascinating insight into what operations were like nearly two hundred years ago.

And, since you are nearby to the river, you have the perfect opportunity to see a ship or two; but not all of them are on the river itself. The Golden Hinde is a perfect example. This was the ship that belonged to Sir Francis Drake, and while the one located by the Thames isn't the real thing, it is a splendid reproduction. It takes you back in time to Drake's days, when he sailed the ship on the open seas. The tour is well worth taking to get you out of the 21st century for a while!

What's more, regardless of the locality of the London hotels, due to the city's excellent transport system you can be sure you are never too far away from the Thames. And before you know it, you can start planning your Thames adventure!
